What We Do
OpenSFF develops open hardware specifications for modular computing. We define how key components fit and work together, giving hardware vendors and system integrators a common foundation to build upon.
A Standard for Modular Computing
OpenSFF specifications define the interfaces and requirements that allow Compute Nodes, Enclosures, and Management Modules to work together. These components can be combined into different system designs while following a shared hardware foundation.

Compute Node
The modular computing component that contains the system's core processing hardware.

Enclosure
The housing that accommodates one or more Compute Nodes. Provides shared infrastructure such as power and cooling.

Management Module
An optional module that provides KVM access and remote management capabilities (Full-featured implementations only).
A Common Foundation with Room to Innovate
OpenSFF defines shared interfaces and requirements without prescribing every aspect of a product's design. Vendors can develop their own implementations, form factors, and feature sets while working within the common foundation established by the specifications.
Interoperability
Defined interfaces are intended to allow compatible components from different vendors to work together.
Serviceability
Compute Nodes and Management Modules can be installed, removed, or replaced in compatible systems.
Design Flexibility
Vendors can adapt their products to different markets and use cases while following the applicable requirements.
